Best for
Sandton Sun and Towers is built for people whose reason for being in Johannesburg is Sandton itself. Delegates at the Sandton Convention Centre, bankers with meetings on Alice Lane, and travellers who want a full-service hotel that connects to a shopping centre without going outdoors are the natural fit. It also works for a first or last night in the country, because the Gautrain shuttle makes the airport run painless. It is less suited to leisure travellers hoping for scenery, to anyone who finds large hotels impersonal, or to families wanting a resort feel: this is a working city hotel of 557 rooms in a financial district, and it behaves like one.
Location and setting
The hotel stands on the corner of Alice Lane and Fifth Street, in the middle of the Sandton central business district. It is built into Sandton City, so the shopping centre, Nelson Mandela Square and the Diamond Walk are reached under cover, and it is connected to the Sandton Convention Centre, which removes the single biggest friction point for anyone attending an event there. The surrounding blocks are corporate towers rather than streetscape, which shapes the rhythm of a stay: weekdays are busy and well serviced, weekends are noticeably quieter, and the life of the area happens inside the malls and the hotel rather than on the pavement.
Rooms and accommodation style
The property is two hotels under one roof, the Sandton Sun and the Sandton Towers, sharing 557 rooms and suites between them and holding two separate reception numbers. The spread of categories is unusually wide: Superior, Deluxe and Corner Deluxe rooms, Family rooms, Executive rooms, Studio rooms, Junior Suites and Suites, Club Floor rooms and Club Suites, Presidential and Penthouse Suites, and an apartment. Two private Club Floor lounges serve guests on those floors. The practical consequence of that range is that the words describing the hotel tell you very little about the room you will actually get; the tower and the category do. Free uncapped wireless internet runs throughout, and check-in is from 14h00 with check-out at 11h00.
Facilities and on-site experience
Facilities are the reason to choose a hotel of this size. There are two outdoor swimming pools, a full spa, and a gym that stays open around the clock with Technogym equipment and steam rooms. A business centre provides self-service workstations. Seven conference venues take groups of up to 150 guests, which handles board meetings, training sessions and small launches in-house, with the Convention Centre next door absorbing anything larger. Secure parking is on site. The Club Floor lounges function as a quieter alternative to the main public areas for guests who want to work or eat without going down to the lobby.
Meals and dining
The dining line-up is genuinely a line-up rather than a single outlet. The Atrium handles breakfast, lunch and dinner, working from seasonal produce, aged cuts and elevated South African dishes. San Restaurant sits at the centre of the hotel and leans on locally sourced seasonal ingredients and African flavours in a setting pitched as relaxed rather than formal. San Deck is the rooftop bar, an all-day spot with cocktails and firepits and the view over Sandton that most visitors remember. San Bar and the Library Lounge occupy the edge of Sandton City’s Diamond Walk, the first for after-work drinks and the second as a quiet corner for coffee or a low-key meeting. MIRA is the design-led space blending dining, drinks and late-night entertainment. Between them and the restaurants of Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, there is no practical need to leave the building for a meal.
Getting there and getting around
The hotel runs a complimentary Gautrain shuttle, and that is the detail that most changes how a stay works. Sandton’s Gautrain station lies beneath Rivonia Road between West Street and Fifth Avenue, with a pedestrian entrance at the Rivonia Road and West Street corner, and it connects directly to O.R. Tambo International as well as to Rosebank, Park, Marlboro, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria and Hatfield. For a business trip that stays inside the Gautrain corridor, a car is genuinely optional. For anything off that corridor, including Soweto, the Cradle of Humankind or Lanseria, you will want a vehicle or e-hailing, and the hotel provides secure parking for self-drive guests. Our Gauteng guide explains how the train, the airport and the two cities fit together.
What to do nearby
Under-cover access to Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square means shopping, cinemas and dozens of restaurants are effectively part of the hotel. Beyond that, the city that matters is a short drive south: the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, the Wits art and origins collections and the Soweto heritage route, all covered in our Johannesburg guide. Pretoria is a single Gautrain journey away for the Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument and the museums, set out in our Pretoria guide. Day trips north-west reach the Cradle of Humankind fossil caves, and a longer run gets you to malaria-free game viewing.
Trade-offs, honestly
Scale is the honest trade. With 557 rooms and a convention centre attached, the public areas run at conference pace when a large event is on, and lifts, breakfast service and the lobby all reflect that. If your trip overlaps a big convention and you want calm, the Club Floors exist for exactly that reason and are worth the upgrade. Second, the on-site conference venues cap at 150 guests, so organisers planning anything larger are using the Convention Centre next door and should plan logistics accordingly rather than assume the hotel absorbs it. Third, the sheer number of room categories across two towers means a booking made without specifying the tower and category is close to a lottery; the difference between a Studio room and a Corner Deluxe is substantial. Fourth, this is a financial district. On a Sunday the surrounding streets are dead, and the hotel’s own outlets plus the shopping centre become your whole world unless you drive.
Before you book
- Specify the tower. Sandton Sun and Sandton Towers are separate buildings with separate reception desks under one property.
- Specify the category. Superior, Deluxe, Corner Deluxe, Studio, Executive, Family, Junior Suite and Club rooms differ meaningfully in size and outlook.
- If you want quiet during a convention week, ask about the Club Floors and their private lounges.
- Check-in is from 14h00 and check-out at 11h00; arrange luggage storage if your flight is an evening one.
- Ask about the complimentary Gautrain shuttle when you book if you plan to travel without a car.
- Book San Deck ahead for sunset; it is the outlet most likely to be full.
How it compares
Against the smaller guest houses in Sandton’s residential pockets such as Parkmore, this is the opposite proposition: you trade a garden, a handful of rooms and a cooked-to-order breakfast for lifts, a 24-hour gym, five places to eat and a covered walk into a shopping centre. Against other large Sandton hotels, the differentiators are the physical connection into Sandton City and the Convention Centre and the rooftop bar; hotels a few blocks away can match the room product but not the covered link. Against staying in Rosebank or the northern suburbs, Sandton costs you character and gains you convenience. Compare the field in our Sandton accommodation listings before deciding, and see the wider Gauteng accommodation directory if your plans are not fixed to Sandton.
Explore the area
Use the hotel as the transport hub it is: the Johannesburg guide above sets out which museums deserve a full day and how to plan a Soweto visit, and Pretoria is a single Gautrain journey for a day trip. When you are ready to move on to the reserves or the coast, the accommodation finder lets you build the rest of the itinerary from here.
Current rates and availability
Pricing at a 557-room hotel in a financial district tracks the corporate and convention diary far more than the tourist season, and it also varies sharply by tower, category and floor, so a single headline figure would be misleading. Club Floor access, suite categories and peak convention weeks all move the number in different directions. The practical approach is to enter your exact dates, then compare a couple of categories against each other in the availability check rather than assuming the cheapest listing describes the room you actually want.
