The Sani Pass is the only road crossing between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho in this part of the Drakensberg, and it is a 4×4 road: a series of hairpins climbing the escarpment to a border post at roughly 2,870 metres. You cannot drive it in an ordinary car, which is why this trip exists.
The route from Durban runs through Pietermaritzburg to the foot of the pass, then up. At the top the tour crosses into Lesotho — a passport is required — and visits a traditional Sotho village, huts arranged around a central livestock area.
A local guide and a driver-guide are included; food, drinks and gratuities are not, though alcoholic drinks can be bought. The day runs about twelve hours. Note that the pass closes in bad weather, and in winter that can mean snow: this is a weather-dependent trip and worth booking early in a stay so there is room to move it.
