Best for

Woodall Country House and Spa is the Addo area’s most comfortable full-service option, and it is built for guests who want the safari without the self-catering. It suits couples on a short, indulgent break, honeymooners, and older travellers who want dinner cooked, a bed turned down and a therapist on site. It works well as a two- or three-night pause in a longer Garden Route itinerary. It is less suitable for families needing multiple bedrooms on a budget, for travellers who want to cook their own meals, and for anyone who likes to walk out of an evening to a different restaurant, because dining here is kept to overnight guests only.

Location and setting

The house stands on Woodall Farm, on Jan Smuts Avenue outside Addo, on a working citrus farm where the orchards fruit through winter. Its co-ordinates place it around thirty-three and a half degrees south, and the practical point is that it sits roughly eight kilometres beyond the main entrance of Addo Elephant National Park, reached by turning off the tar near the Elephant House and running the last kilometre and a bit on gravel. That position is a genuine quirk worth understanding: you drive past the park gate to get to the property, and then drive back to it in the morning. The compensation is a quiet farm setting with a lake at its heart, birds on the water, and the Zuurberg foothills rising to the north.

Rooms and accommodation style

Accommodation divides into luxury rooms, luxury suites and family units, and the gap between them is wider than the shared word luxury suggests. Luxury rooms come with twin or king beds, en-suite bathrooms with private outdoor showers, climate control, private verandas, mini-bars, electronic safes and internet access. The suites are a different animal: spacious bedrooms with separate sitting and dressing areas, expansive bathrooms with double outdoor showers, and their own private pools and gardens. For families there are two family units, each a main room with an annex holding a sleeper bed and a shared bathroom, plus a single family suite with two en-suite bedrooms, an outside shower and a private pool. Décor is contemporary and colourful rather than colonial-safari, with natural materials used throughout.

Facilities and on-site experience

The Citrus Spa is the reason a lot of guests choose Woodall over a bush lodge. Its treatment list runs to Dermalogica skin work, African Wood Massage, Aromatherapy, Citrus Fusion, African Head Massage, Swedish, Hot Stone and a Citrus Burst Candle Massage, alongside signature sugar scrubs and mud wraps built on indigenous ingredients. Facilities include a hydrotherapy bath, sauna, steam shower, a heated Vichy shower, a chromatherapy shower and a gymnasium, with mobile beds for in-room treatments and outdoor treatments available. There are one-, two- and three-night spa packages, and a Prince and Princess menu for children. Day packages are open to non-residents. Game viewing is handled in-house: open-topped Land Cruisers depart twice daily into Addo Elephant National Park with guides who know the area intimately.

Meals and dining

The restaurant sits over the lake, and meals are taken on the deck or inside on colder nights. Breakfast is farm-style: fresh breads, pastries and muffins, home-made jams and preserves, cheeses, yoghurt, cereals, fruit and meats. Dinner follows the same philosophy, drawing on ostrich, Karoo lamb and venison, free-range poultry, East Coast fish, local artisan cheeses and produce from the kitchen gardens. There is an underground cellar holding South African wines, and a pianist plays most evenings. The important structural fact is that dining is exclusive to overnight guests, which makes the evening private and personal but also means you cannot invite friends staying elsewhere to join you, and cannot easily eat out without driving back toward Addo village.

Getting there and getting around

The standard approach from Gqeberha runs north out of the city, onto the N2 and then the N10 through Paterson before turning toward Addo. Reckon on something near one hundred and twelve kilometres from the airport and about eighty minutes of driving. The final approach leaves the tar and covers roughly one and a quarter kilometres of gravel, which is fine in a normal hire car in dry weather but deserves care after rain. A vehicle is essential; there is nothing within walking distance and the property’s game drives are the only transport laid on.

What to do nearby

Addo Elephant National Park is eight kilometres back down the road. Its Main Gate admits visitors from 07:00 and closes at 19:00 year-round; Matyholweni, at the coastal end, opens at 07:00 and closes at 18:30. The internal game-area gates shift with the season and SANParks asks that you confirm current times at reception. Conservation fees for this cycle apply from 1 November 2025 until 31 October 2026 and then increase on 1 November 2026. If a night inside the park appeals as a contrast, note that Nyathi Rest Camp closes for renovation from 1 September 2026 through 31 March 2027. Addo markets itself as a Big 7 destination, meaning the Big Five plus the southern right whale and great white shark found in its marine section, so the two marine species are not animals you will encounter on a game drive here. Further afield, the Zuurberg pass gives mountain views and the Sundays River offers paddling toward Colchester.

Trade-offs, honestly

The honest cautions are specific. The first is the gap between room grades: a luxury room and a private-pool suite are materially different stays, and if the private pool is what you are picturing, book the suite explicitly. The second is the guests-only dining policy, which is lovely for privacy and limiting for variety on a longer stay. The third is that the spa accepts day visitors, so on a busy afternoon the treatment rooms and gym are not your private preserve. The fourth is the geography: being past the park gate adds a short but real drive at both ends of every game-viewing day.

Before you book

  • Specify a suite if you want a private pool; the standard rooms do not have one.
  • Book spa treatments in advance, particularly if you want a couples slot.
  • Reserve seats on the twice-daily game drive when you confirm the room.
  • Ask about the gravel approach if you are arriving late or after heavy rain.
  • Families should compare the two family units against the single family suite carefully.

How it compares

Woodall is the polished end of the Addo market. Chrislin African Lodge, closer to the gate, offers a warmer, simpler, more themed stay with a restaurant of its own but nothing resembling a spa. Avoca River Cabins is self-catering, riverside and family-first, an entirely different proposition. Addo Park Suma’s Rest is a small guest house with kitchenettes and a braai area, good value for independent travellers but without staff service or in-house drives. If service, food and a serious spa are the point of the trip, Woodall is the clear pick in this area.

Explore the area

For the practical detail of gates, permits and what the park actually delivers, see our Addo destination guide. The Gqeberha guide is useful if you are flying in and out and want a beach night at either end, and the province-wide Eastern Cape guide places the Sundays River Valley alongside the Karoo and the coast for anyone planning a longer loop.

Current rates and availability

Tariffs at Woodall shift with room grade, season and whether you take a spa package, and the suites sit some distance above the rooms, so any figure printed here would mislead within weeks.
