The Valley of a Thousand Hills is the broken country inland of Durban where the Umgeni River cuts down towards the coast, and it is close enough to the city to make a half-day trip work. This one runs about four hours from the beachfront.

At Phezulu Cultural Village the visit covers traditional beehive-shaped huts, hands-on activities such as Zulu spear making, and a dance performance. The adjoining reptile park is toured with a guide and holds crocodiles and snakes.

Pickup and drop-off are offered within five kilometres of the operator’s Durban office, including from cruise ships, and the driver-guide is included. Food, drinks and gratuities are not. It is the shortest of the Durban day trips and the one that works if you only have a morning.
